Summary

The project focus on two important salmonid species for aquaculture: rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). It is a collaboration between the Aquaculture and Fisheries group (AFI) of Wageningen University (The Netherlands) and the institute of Marine Research (IMR) of Bergen (Norway). The study aims to improve understanding of the interplay between osmoregulation and digestion in the gastrointestinal tracts of rainbow trout and Atlantic salmon under both freshwater and marine settings. This is crucial to animal welfare as aquaculture feed formulation shifts toward protein sources other than fish meal and fish oil, and could help enhance the overall growth and wellbeing of these fish through improved feed formulation.
