Food security is one of the great challenges of our time. The Earth is expected to have nine billion inhabitants by 2050. Together with the effects of climate change – such as the increased scarcity of fresh water and energy – this rise in population will make the worldwide production of and access to food uncertain, while the market prices of key food crops become more volatile.

Feeding the world
Feeding the world is a challenge. We will have to feed 10 billion people by 2050. More pressingly, we will have to do so within our planet’s limits. This is not impossible, but consumption and production will have to change drastically for it to happen.

Food security and the value of water
The United Nations strive for ‘zero hunger’ in 2030. Meanwhile, over the past years, the number of people suffering from hunger and malnutrition has increased on a global scale. Furthermore, food systems are vulnerable to climate change and are required to feed an ever-increasing population. These facts are felt primarily by the lower and middle social strata in Africa and Asia. Providing every world citizen with sufficient and healthy nutrition demands a transition towards sustainable food systems.
