Wageningen is the world in one place!

Choosing Food Technology

"In high school, I had more of an interest toward science and I really liked physics and math. And I also enjoyed chemistry and biology. I always collected food packages and read all the details in the back. I liked baking as well back then, and then my dad said, ‘how about food processing, food technology, food science?’ And then I went and looked it up. And I fell in love with it; everything. So I chose Food technology. When went to apply to universities, I searched for ‘food technology and best university worldwide’, and then WUR came on top. So that was the deciding factor in the end."

(International) Student Life Experience

"I have a mix of Dutch friends and international. That is nice because I like to learn from both the culture and the way of thinking. Also I enjoy just helping people translate things from the Dutch way of doing things to international way. I’m a member of the study association, Nicolas Appert. There we have fun activities together organized by different committees. I also do the photography and handling the social media for the study association. Other than that, photography is my hobby, so I'm always taking pictures around the university and being everywhere."

Academic Atmosphere

"The study programme lots of contact hours, lots of practicals and lectures. In addition to that, there are also lots of other activities that we have, like talks hosted by either the university or different organizations. So that's great for keeping up with modern research and development, and also on the career side from the study association.

I loved the course Food Properties and Function because we got to make our own food product. We made vegetarian bacon made from carrots. We tried to mimic the characteristics of bacon, but using carrot as a base and we were in charge of the formulation. That was interesting. I would say that there's quite a lot of excursions so that you've been able to participate in during your study. For example, the international excursion to Switzerland. That one also was a highlight for me, we got to see all different kinds of companies."

Goals after graduation

"I will do my master’s at WUR, because I want to work either in research and development. I think more on the processing side in production, because I like process engineering and food ingredient functionality."

Take home message

"This study includes lots of practicals and different kinds of topics. It really gives you a very wide and broad idea of food technology, so you really understand the different aspects of it. And I love that you basically can find the whole world in one town here! Yeah, it's the world in one place. It's a very open culture, and no one judges you. Everyone is willing to talk to you, and it's always a nice discussion. This also helps with being collaborative and working in groups."
