ReThink Food Challenge

With limited resources, a growing global population, and climate change causing extreme conditions, we require more sustainable and circular methods of food cultivation to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Research into space farming can serve as a catalyst, propelling the development of technologies that support sustainable food production on Mars, Moon and Earth. It can also help us to utilise locations on Earth that were previously deemed unsuitable for farming and reconsider the concept of food.

For this reason Wageningen University & Research initiates the ReThink Food Challenge.

What is it about?

In this international student competition you develop a business idea that offers an innovative, circular and sustainable approach to growing food on Earth by learning from research on space farming. Ideas can involve enhancing current technologies, introducing new ones, or reimagining the concept of 'food'.

How?

In an interdisciplinary team focus on one of the two major topics within (space) farming: indoor farming or alternative proteins. You need to identify a real-life problem and a concrete market, and design an innovation that is viable and fills an existing gap. Throughout the Challenge your team will closely collaborate with industry leaders.

For whom?

The Challenge is open to students from universities and universities of applied sciences worldwide, in all phases of their studies (BSc, MSc, PhD or equivalent). To come up with a comprehensive solution meeting all the Challenge’s criteria, your team should include members with different areas of expertise, from technical to social and economic. You can register individually or with a team.
