Floris Schmidt - Master Sustainable Supply Chain Analytics

Floris Schmidt choose to study at Wageningen University & Research after he visited the open day on campus. Beside the nice experience during the open day, the combination of sustainability and business administration convinced him to study here at Wageningen.

The combination of sustainability and business administration was also a reason for me to choose Wageningen, because in other cities an integral focus was not laid during the study.

What do you think about studying in Wageningen?

I am currently writing my Master's thesis with the aim of promoting the sharing of sustainability data in the floriculture chain. I also had good experiences in the field of communication during Academic Consultancy Training. By doing assignments with different stakeholders and multiple clients, you also learn to distinguish perspectives even better, in order to arrive at the best decision. During my master I also did an internship for a month during the summer holidays at a Tech Startup, which I can certainly recommend. Because I had no other experience in the workplace before I started my Master's internship, I was able to get acquainted with the different functions in a non-binding way. Here I came into contact with different parts of the business community in order to get a more complete picture.

I followed the lectures and tutorials in my Master's degree in a hybrid way (in class and online). The recordings of the lectures are often online immediately after the lecture, which for me facilitated studying. Furthermore, the enthusiastic teachers were often well prepared with interesting statements instead of reading the material to be studied. Students are actively involved in the lectures, which means that many students attend. The group work was also organized in a clear way, so that we could often immediately start with topics about all kinds of different business forms or the programming of optimal ordering or logistics strategies. In addition to the head teacher, the supervision during the group work and the tutorials was also provided by student assistants who had often followed this course 1 or 2 years before. This made them very approachable and they were often able to point out the right points, so that you still have to come up with the answer yourself.

What would you like for the future?

Specialising in this Master's programme makes it possible to delve even more deeply into a specific field. Because students who follow social studies in Wageningen often have a broader orientation, this is a step in the right direction. The general basis belongs in the Bachelor's, where in the Master's, it is precisely the in-depth that can be sought.

In the future I would like to work on making supply chains more sustainable in various sectors in the field of transport and production. I also want to ensure that these chains also become more resilient in order to be able to absorb unexpected situations. The WUR also showed me that although it is good to think progressively, it is also important to be in contact with the people concerned by the measures, in order to arrive at the most sustainable solution together.
