In 2023, 98% of the peer-reviewed articles by WUR corresponding authors were published Open Access! A big thank you to our researchers for publishing Open Access, enhancing the visibility and impact of WUR’s research findings.

2023 Open Access numbers

In 2023, 98% of the peer-reviewed articles by WUR corresponding authors were published Open Access. Compared to 78% in 2018, this is a huge increase over the last 5 years. For all peer-reviewed articles of both WUR corresponding and co-authors, the Open Access percentage is 94% in 2023. These percentages will increase over time as ‘closed’ articles can be opened up after an embargo period, using the Taverne amendment. You can find more Open Access statistics in this infographic of 2023.

Taverne implementation gives boost

The high Open Access percentage is partially due to the implementation of the “Taverne Amendment", implemented from 2021 onwards. The amendment allows researchers to open their closed short scientific works in Research@WUR six months after the first (online) publication. WUR researchers may do this regardless of the publisher’s policy.

For WU authors, their short scientific works published after 1 January 2023 are shared open access by default. As a WU author you do not need to give permission for publications to be made public. However, you have the right to opt-out and exclude one or more of your works from open access availability.

As a WR researcher, you can use the Taverne participation form to open up your publications. Please check beforehand whether you fulfil the conditions for participation (WR).

Many WUR publications are opened by the Taverne tool. For 2023, almost 500 articles and more than 100 book chapters plus conference proceedings have been opened with the Taverne amendment. These numbers will continue to increase over time.
