The effect of dietary protein on health in dairy cows
December 1, 2022 - By Axel van Ruitenbeek -
Creating resilience in pigs through artificial intelligence
October 15, 2022 - By Mahsa Mohseni -
Automated broiler phenotyping
April 1, 2022 - The project aims to identify, upscale and implement technologies for automated individual broiler phenotyping to improve the currently recorded and novel phenotypic traits related to health, welfare and performance. Through extensive collaboration with broiler breeding practice and technological partners, we dedicate ourselves to research towards full practical implementation. -
Microbiome and the health of animals
January 1, 2022 - The microbiome in the gut of mammals is important for (gut) health, as well as for the development and functioning of the immune system. Recent research in humans and laboratory animals suggests that the gut microbiome has a particular impact on lung immunity and may play a role in resistance to respiratory infections. In this context, the gut-lung axis is referred to, which refers to the two-way communication between the gut microbiome and the microbiome and immune system in the lung. Perhaps this gut-lung axis could also be used to promote the health of (meat) calves. -
Microbiome in relation to CH4 and NH3 emissions
January 1, 2022 - Reduction of methane emissions can be achieved through an integrated feed and animal-oriented approach. Enteric methane production is largely influenced by feeding strategies and by control of the (rumen) microbiome. This project plan investigates the microbiome track and its influence through animal management. -
Resilient Agriculture for Inclusive and Sustainable Ethiopian food systems (RAISE-FS)
September 1, 2021 - The four-year Resilient Agriculture for Inclusive and Sustainable Ethiopian Food Systems programme (RAISE-FS) is aimed to bring about transformation in the Ethiopian food system. RAISE-FS will develop and implement a demand-driven and interdisciplinary approach to Research for Food System Transformation and as such contribute to the Government of Ethiopia’s transformational agenda. -
Swine influenza infections in porcine airway organoids
May 1, 2021 - Researchers in this project initially cultivated miniature airways from cows, pigs, and other animal species. Starting in 2023, the project has shifted its focus towards the cultivation of pig organoids and their exposure to swine influenza infections. -
Stunning captured wild sea fish for better animal welfare
April 1, 2021 - Due to societal developments, it is important that the fishing industry focuses on sustainable, socially acceptable and valued products and production methods. Attention to animal welfare also fits in with these developments. Injuries caused by killing and processing captured fish on board commercial fishing vessels can be minimised by stunning the animals, rendering them unconscious, prior to killing and processing. -
Low emission management on dairy farms with enough land for their production
April 1, 2021 - Low emission farm management on dairy farms with enough land for their production ('grondgebonden bedrijven') can be seen as a source-oriented farming strategy for environmental issues like climate, water and nitrogen. This project works on substantiating this claim, as well as on the development of a system for accountability and control, and on transfer of knowledge to the broader group of dairy farmers in the Netherlands. -
Continuous monitoring of livestock house emissions and indoor concentrations
January 3, 2021 - By Marien Korevaar
